Another Aston Villa player is in the news and this time its former irish international Stephen Ireland. It’s been reported that he’s set to join Newcastle on a season long loan, ending his miserable spell with Aston Villa since signing back in the Summer.
Since 2006 Stephen Ireland has looked a shadow of the player he was back in his glory days at Manchester City and is really starting to struggle with the pace of the Premier League of late. His move to Aston Villa was seen as a ‘career-saver’ but a public dispute with manager Gerard Houllier saw his chances of first team football diminished, leaving him thumb-tweedling for much of the season.
Ireland has only started six Premier League games this season under the guidance of Houiller and has struggled for form since arriving from Manchester City. It was a move seen to have saved the Irishman’s career but things went pear-shaped when he couldn’t find a place on the starting eleven.
Ireland hasn’t started since December for the Villains and with the arrival of Jean Makoun from Lyon, his chance of first team football has taken a turn for the worst.
During this month’s transfer window, Ireland was linked with Celtic but his wage demands scuppered any chance of a move to the SPL giants. Bolton have also been linked with the midfielder but it seems the Magpies have beat them to it and signed him until the end of the season.
