Moreno Facing Sanctions After He Kicked Owl Who Died From Shock

Deportivo Pereira player Luis Moreno is facing a possible suspension and fine after he kicked an owl to its eventual death on Sunday. Moreno, when he had seen the owl wander on to the pitch decided to get rid of the owl and kicked it up to a meter beyond the touchline. It was reported at the time that the owl had suffered only a small fracture to its right leg but the owl then died from shock on Monday as it was unable to deal with the ordeal it suffered. Fans at the match were noted to have yelled “murder, murder” when they saw Moreno commit the offence.

The video has sparked worldwide controversy after it went viral late on Sunday night. The football website 101greatgoals.com were one of the first to report on the matter and from then on it travelled around the world, to Moreno’s dismay.

“I want to apologise to the fans,” Moreno said after the match. “I was not trying to hurt the owl. I did it to see if it would fly.

“What I wanted to do was get it off the field. The kick was a product of tension on the field at the time.”

When I saw the video I was furious. I mean, who’s allowed do that? Its an absolute disgrace. I don’t care what excuse he came up with there’s no explanation for doing that to a poor owl. And, it once again brings up the subject of animal abuse, this being one of the biggest the world has seen in quite some time.
